Leah Barber

(Yoga) I started practicing yoga 9 years ago with the Bikram style which I found to be challenging yet lacking the mind body connection that I needed. As an elementary school teacher, I needed an outlet to help me come down from those stressful days and refresh my brain. A few years later, I shifted and started practicing many different styles of yoga until I found that power vinyasa was the perfect balance of the many styles of yoga I tried. It provided a good combination of breath work, stretching, strength training, and a mind body connection all in a fun and flowing format. In 2010, I completed yoga teacher training at Franklin Street Yoga Center, learning to teach in the power vinyasa style. A few months later, I trained at the NC School of Yoga as a children’s yoga teacher.

The adult classes I teach most are a flow/vinyasa style. I emphasize core work in order to build stability in all poses. I am nurturing so I encourage my students to do their best and be comfortable with where they are in their practice. I take pride in introducing yoga to people and getting them involved in the practice by teaching the basics, helping them understand the poses and practice, as well as encouraging growth. My classes always have world, soul, jazz, and funk music that helps maintain an ebb and flow and entertain.

My children’s classes are fun-filled with yoga, music and stories. I have a natural ability to work with children and I provide an environment that is inclusive where each child can find comfort in learning yoga poses and invent new poses. With the experience I have in teaching kindergarten and 2nd grade, I gained valuable classroom management skills that carry over nicely in my yoga classes. I provide a structured but loving and safe yoga class for children to enjoy.

Sarah Bish

(Yoga) Sarah Bish first discovered yoga in a gym around 2004.  In 2008, she had the opportunity to study Classical Yoga with Chandra Om at the NC School of Yoga in a teacher training program, which changed her life forever. She continues to be in awe of the profound purifying effects she experiences through the Holy Science of Yoga, both physically and mentally.  Sarah continues to study with her teacher and hopes to share what aspects she masters with others who wish to know. When she is not practicing yoga, she is spending time with her two dogs, babysitting, working at a local coffee roasting company, studying the Bhagavad Gita and praying for Divine assistance in all of the above.  She says, "I just hope to be an example of even a small part of what this yoga practice can do for any person."

Lisa Bradrick

(Yoga) Lisa’s path to yoga began in college with Hatha yoga classes taught at the university gym. Her athletic experience up to that point was limited and the intricacies of yogic practice and philosophy seemed intimidating at first. After a few classes, however she realized yoga was precisely what she had been searching for all along. Her enthusiasm for her practice has deepened over the last several years as a path towards better health and personal enrichment. Her practice has given her all of that and much more.

Lisa is certified through Om Yoga and has a background in social work and psychology which has helped to support her growth as an instructor. She strives to give her students the same kind, compassionate instruction she found in her first instructor. Lisa uses her classes as a way for students to connect with themselves, release stress and tension and to find a calm place in the chaos. Lisa imparts humor, kindness and provides a safe space for exploration. Her classes focus on walking the middle path, balancing effort and ease in body and mind.

When away from the mat Lisa spends time cultivating her culinary skills and relaxing with her husband and animals.

Diane Brann

Diane draws from many styles and disciplines of yoga and meditation, and believes that yoga and meditation can improve every aspect of our lives, and add a deeper awareness, wisdom and compassion, for ourselves and for each other. Her classes combine meditation, pranayama, movement, stretching and postures to create a gentle yogic flow. In order to create the most beneficial experience for students, Diane is commited to her own spiritual, professional and personal and educational growth.

Emily Burrows

(Yoga) My yoga practice is ever-changing and as it’s deepened it has helped me to heal injuries, balance my mood, and find greater connection and light within and around me. I recently completed a transformative teacher training with Ti Harmony in Carrboro and am excited about this new adventure teaching yoga! I endeavor to hold a supportive space for people to experience the loveliness and truth in their bodies and selves, exactly as they are.

I often use energizing music in my practice and teaching, with longer held poses and mindful attention to the present moment.

Off the mat I work at a great global health nonprofit in Durham, and in my free time I’m happy to wander the farmer’s market with my partner, travel to fun new locales (or more often daydream about them), and geek out to all manner of music.

Ann BurrusAnn Burrus

(Yoga, Restorative Yoga) For me, yoga is a means of self-discovery, about who you are spiritually, physically, and mentally.  Whatever struggles or joys you may be experiencing will be reflected in your yoga.  Observing your body, your breath, thoughts and emotions in asana can be quite revealing whether on a day-to-day basis or over the years.

Drawn to the healing power of yoga, physically as well as spiritually, I teach an alignment-based form of yoga and believe that everyone, regardless of physical limitation, can benefit from doing yoga.  I have taught yoga since receiving my 240- hour certification in 2003.  Judith Lasater, Sara Meeks, Lillah Schwartz, and Nischala Joy Devi are my major influences.  I am currently enrolled in the 500- hour Iyengar teacher training program at Lighten Up Yoga in Asheville, NC.

Certified to teach:  Hatha yoga, restorative yoga, yoga for osteoporosis/osteopenia, prenatal yoga, yoga for heart and cancer patients.

Sarah Rose Nordgren

(Yoga) Sarah Rose was lucky enough to be introduced to yoga at a young age, but began practicing seriously in 2004 after college, where she studied writing and dance. Since then, yoga has been a part of her daily life, and she has studied with teachers in a variety of styles, including both vinyasa and alignment-based traditions. When she moved back home to Chapel Hill two years ago, she was blessed to find Ti Harmony, who’s teacher training program she recently completed.

Also a working poet, Sarah Rose holds an MFA in Creative Writing from UNC Greensboro. Her writing life and yoga life are two pieces of the same coin, and she approaches each as means of devotion and expression.

Sarah Rose’s classes are energetic, playful, and deep, and open to all levels.

Carolyn PenceIris Padgett

(Yoga) I have been practicing yoga for 8 years, and recently completed a yoga teacher training with Ti Harmony in Carrboro.  I was drawn to yoga originally for its therapeutic qualities and emotional healing power; it has nursed me from depression and filled my life with light. When someone asks me how yoga can be beneficial, I say, “In every way imaginable!”  My background is a mix of several different styles – primarily Vinyasa flow and heart-centered Anusara yoga.   I like a lively, uplifting practice with gentle space to explore the inner landscapes of the body and mind.

My intention as a yoga practitioner is to live with more grace and with a calm, compassionate, open heart.  I try to use my practice to build faith in myself and my abilities, and to create more harmony in my lifestyle and relationships.  My intention as a yoga teacher is to be a support for others on their own paths, and to boost confidence and self-love by creating a safe, playful environment where students can begin to listen to and trust their own inner voices.

When I’m not on the mat, I love a good conversation, a cup of tea on a porch swing, sunshine, hiking, reading, and playing with my dog, Dharma.

Lina Pratt

(Yoga, Massage Therapy) I am fascinated with the mind-body-spirit connection and have a great appreciation for the uniqueness that is expressed with each of us as we live in our bodies. My intention is to live more fully and peacefully in my body and I enjoy helping others to do the same.

I have been a licensed massage therapist in NC since 2002, taking my training at the Body Therapy Institute in Siler City. I have long felt a deep connection with yoga that goes beyond words. In May of 2011, I completed my yoga teacher training with Ti Harmony. I have found that deepening my yoga practice as I move in the last third of my life is a perfect way to embrace this time with beauty and grace.

I look forward to meeting you and what we can learn from each other.

Thomas Prince

(Yoga) Through friends, I casually learned about meditation and a few asanas as a teenager. Also there were two pranayamas that stayed with me through the years. When the load-bearing exercise that much of my work life entailed began to wear my frame, I came back to yoga for healing. Teacher training with Ti Harmony has amplified my practice and study to the extent that yoga is now primary to my thought and action.

Back in hippie days, the early ‘70s, a group of us would sit in a field or backyard and talk about philosophies. Yoga was a frequent visitor and we would show each other positions we had discovered. Though there is more knowledge available about yoga and its learning systems today, I would like to keep that casual friendship and exploration in daily practice. Morning practice for me is a time to check the weather in myself, my state of being, balance and thought, then to temper this self for the day.

Susan ReevesSusan Reeves

Paula Shile
Paula Shile

(Yoga, Pilates) Paula Shile has been a life-long celebrant of movement. From the age of four, afternoons were spent in modern dance classes. The environment encouraged self-expression & choreography. Performance opportunities were abundant. Eventually, the passion for dance led to the Boston Conservatory of Music as a dance major. A significant influence was the work of Martha Graham, whose technique worked closely with the collection & expansion of energy.

As a student of spiritual practices, Yoga became a joyful way of bringing together the love of movement with spiritual awareness. Paula has taught Yoga and Pilates in Hillsborough and Chapel Hill for the last 3 years. She has studied with a wide variety of local instructors including Paula Huffman, Sabine Mead, Molly Drake and many others. She holds certificates from IFTA in Yoga and Mat Pilates. Susan Spinarski

(Yoga) I began my yogic journey as a student of Iyengar yoga in 2005. Suffering from chronic back pain I soon realized the healing and strengthening effects of yoga, internally as well as externally. Feeling the urge to continue my growth and to share my discoveries I attended yoga teacher training in March 2008. Completeing the course under the guidance of Ghandar Mandlik and his tutors at Yoga Vidya Gurukal in Maharastra, India. The school is joined to the great tradition of Swami Satyananda Saraswati of Bihar School of Yoga. After returning to Canada I found a true love for teaching yoga. Learning constantly from students, helping to shape the more traditional training to fit the needs of the moment, here in the west. In January 2009 I headed back to Yoga Vidya Gurukul to complete the Advanced Course diploma in yogic studies.
It was well still in India I discovered I was pregnant with my daughter. I now live in the area with my husband, who is from here and my daughter. Becoming a mother has opened up a whole new area of exciting self discoveries. I love to explore different styles of yoga and teaching, starting with the tradional foundations of my teachers in India and growing with my students, as we all learn from each other.

Ellen Steinberg

(Yoga) A yoga practitioner for over a decade, a student of many styles including Anusara, Ashtanga and Jivamukti, and a recent graduate of Franklin Street Yoga's Teacher Training in the Baptiste tradition, Ellen brings a wealth of knowledge and a general love of yoga to her flow classes. She also brings the experience of being a working woman in advertising and utilizing a way to turn inward, to quiet the thinking mind and to, simply, move.

In Ellen’s classes, prepare to sweat and fine-tune. Expect to connect and escape. Be ready to challenge yourself and grow. Possibly, you might even laugh.

Bring a towel and an open mind.

Paula ShileBlake Tedder

(Yoga) Blake’s style influenced by Angela Farmer and Victor Van Kooten, Erich Schiffmann, Kripalu and Integral Yoga systems, and Ti Harmony. Blake digs classical yoga and alignment but is finding that feeling deeper into the body, playing with energy and the breath, and feeling and allowing emotions to surface all during the physical practice is where the healing really begins to take place. Blake survived a plane crash in the mountains of Colorado at 16 and has found yoga and meditation to be the most powerful and empowering tool for dealing with the effects of trauma, stress, pain and change. Blake completed teacher traiing with Ti Harmony in 2010 and is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT®) with the Yoga Alliance.

Jeff WellsJeff Wells

(Yoga) I I live and work in Hillsborough as a Massage and Bodywork Therapist.  I have worked in the healing arts for over ten years and have experience as a dancer, martial artist, and yoga instructor.  Yoga has brought joy to my life and has helped me heal from many injuries over the years.  It is my belief that we all contribute to the health of the planet and each other every time we expand our awareness of our own health.  I love teaching because it is one way I can touch a group of people, and invite them to increase their capacity to see themselves in an honorable and loving light.  We all continue to learn so much from one another, and then, like a budding flower openning, we find we can learn even more.

II currently enjoy hiking, biking, singing, and nature.  I love my wife and three children whom we home school.  I study and live a spiritual practice which leads me to Mexico one or two times each year.  This practice involves daily prayer and commitment.  It is, in the end, to be of service to my community and to the Divine.

Julie Wells

I began my yoga practice in 1998 and found both physical and spiritual stability in a small community class focusing on the Iyengar approach. My regular practice supported both of my pregnancies and grounded me during my early years of mothering. My professional work centers around children and youth with physical and emotional disabilities and in recent years, I have become a Behavior Specialist, focusing my passion on adolescents who struggle in school, with their families and with drugs and alcohol. I have used yoga with court-involved youth and helped teens find their own sense of power through meditation and relaxation.

As a professional speaker and resiliency trainer, I have helped teachers, after schools, day cares and group homes staffs use yoga and relaxation as a way to manage their clients’ behaviors and regulate their own emotions in challenging situations. I believe that the challenge we all face to is learn to set our intentions while also recognizing the limitations we face when trying to control our lives. In December of 2009, I had a Sudden Cardiac Arrest, received life-saving CPR and external defibrillation, and spent a week in intensive care. I have an Implantable Cardioverter- Defibrillator (ICD) which shocks my heart when it goes out of rhythm, which can happen anytime, anywhere. After living through a year of panic attacks associated with the trauma, I am helping others with ICDs learn to manage the emotional impact of having a sudden health change and I continue to use yoga as a way to manage my own stability.

I was certified as a Child Light Kids Yoga Teacher at the Wilmington Yoga Center. I have been a work study at Hillsborough Yoga and Healing Arts since October of 2009 and believe in our community’s need to have our own place to practice.

Bart Westdorp

(Yoga) Bart spent his childhood & adolescence in the Netherlands. He comes from a very linear, pragmatic culture, where the ‘truth’ is analyzed from an empirical perspective, not simply experienced. He uses his ongoing questioning and observation as tools to deepen his understanding of yogic practices.
Bart is a craftsman, artist, athlete, and teacher. When not practicing yoga, he can be found building or repairing just about anything. He likes to know how things work, from a mechanical, yet also cosmic angle.
Bart began his spiritual journey over 20 years ago, when he decided to become a vegetarian. Without knowing the language yet, he started practicing many of the Yamas and Niyamas of Yoga. He eventually found himself engrossed in Buddhism, Taoism and meditation.

Bart started his Asana practice many years ago. His first class with Dharma Mittra in New York in 2009 ignited his true passion for Yoga, and that fall he entered his 200 hour Body Centering Yoga Teacher Training, with Nina Be as his mentor. He still considers this to be one of the best decisions he ever made.

After completing his training, Bart started teaching at the Body Center, a studio in Raleigh that he built with his father and uncle in 2008. He currently teaches there, and at Burt’s Bees corporate office. He co leads the Body Centering Yoga Immersions & Teacher Trainings with Nina Be. He enjoys a very ‘physical’ practice, but also truly appreciates the benefits of Restorative Yoga & Yoga Nidra.

Bart has had the good fortune of spending two retreats with his spiritual teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh. He tries to incorporate mindfulness into everything he does, from being vegan, to striving for ‘zero waste’ is in his daily life.

Bart’s favorite quote:

“Things are not what they appear to be, nor are they otherwise.”
~Surangama Sutra
